A date with dates? - Richard in Stockholm Sweden wrote:

I really miss dates in your review section! It is - at least for me - of vital interest to know when the review was written AND the version of the program in question.

I'm sorry Richard. I keep version numbers out because I hate updating articles constantly. I do plan to create a search tool for my newsletter archive that will include the dates of the newsletter and the included reviews.

Abiword is wordless - PSBeCandid wrote:

I was wondering if maybe you could help me with this problem. I am running WinMe. I tried to use this program "Abiword", a program that was listed in your reviews. It seems like a great program which I so anxiously wanted to try. Clif, for the life of me I cannot get this program to work on my machine.

There is indeed a problem. I was able to get Abiword to run on my ~WinME, but only if I didn't install the plugins for it. I'm recommending other suites with Word compatible programs for those of us who still use Windows ME. I like the Word-like programs in OpenOffice and 602 PcSuite, and so far they run quite well on Windows ME.

The invisible man - Wow! I like to have the security protection that one of my readers has. See this message that Boris at regmagik.com sent me.

Clif, I got several requests today and send out activation codes. One request I was unable to reply to is below. The message came without a "From" e-mail address. Can you help to find out what is Murphy's e-mail address?

I'm at a loss to understand how anyone could send an email without a return address. If any of you out there is Murphy, please resend that email to Boris if you want your activation code. RegmagiK is not freeware, but you can GetRegmagikForFree. Thank you very much Boris.

Missing the big picture - McCullogh wrote me with a problem.

My brother in law had to to perform a system restore, and ended up losing the digital pictures that were stored on his hard disc....is there a way to recover these images?

Fortunately, I've never had to go through this nightmare. I keep multiple backups of important files. I also keep important files on a hard drive that is not the same as the one that Windows is installed on. Try one of these free data recovery tools. Something here should work for you unless the files are overwritten.

No advantage in the Windows Genuine Advantage? - alhigdon wrote me.

I've also found out about another alternative/addition to Windows Update. WindizUpdate This free website allows users of Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3, Netscape 4.0, Mozilla Firebird 0.7, Opera 5, or K-Meleon 0.9 to keep their copy of Windows up-to-date. Newer releases of these browsers are also suitable.

Thanks Al, it looks like a fantastic free web service. See this thread at the Freeware Forum for more details.

To everyone: I like getting messages from you. Don't hesitate to comment here or EmailClif.
