IS THE DOWNLOAD LINK EASY TO FIND? - Yes there's a download link on the home page.

WHAT KIND OF PROGRAM IS IT? - ZippyLock is a small and extremely easy to use password manager with unique anti-key-

logger, Triple-DES encryption, Google-like smart search box, inactivity lock, CAPTCHA and login delay against

dictionary attacks.

IS IT AN EASY PROGRAM TO INSTALL? - Yes. It is just one msi file.

DOES IT COME WITH AN UNINSTALLER? - No. It can be removed from Control Panel/Add Remove Programs.

WHERE DID YOU FIND IT? - I wrote it.

WERE YOU LOOKING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS? - Yes. I wrote ZippyLock for my own use because I don't trust browser's

WHAT ARE YOU USING IT FOR? - To enter passwords and other sensitive information on Internet based forms without

WHAT WERE YOU USING BEFORE YOU FOUND THIS? - I was just entering passwords directly on forms using the keyboard like everyone else.

HAS IT SOLVED A PROBLEM YOU WERE HAVING? - Yes. Its security is second to none. No other password manager comes with anti-keylogger and CAPTCHA protection. I am confident that ZippyLock is the best one in terms of security and ease of use.

WHAT PROBLEMS HAS IT CAUSED? - It is fairly stable now. To this date I have 216 registered users in the last 2 months, one user reported an installation related problem and I fixed it instantly, no other issues have been reported. The web site has release notes and release history. ZippyLock is well supported. I also try to educate users on password security. I have a very comprehensive FAQ page.

IS THE PROGRAM EASY TO USE? - Yes. Most users figure it out without help.

DOES IT COME WITH HELP FILES? - Yes.

WHAT FEATURES DO YOU LIKE OR NOT LIKE? - Security features are unprecedented, CAPTCHA defense wall, anti-key-logger, anti-clipboard-logger. I don't think other products can compete with its security features. It is extremely easy to use, Google-like search box, no tree controls, no groupings, easy management from system tray.

WHAT FEATURES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ADDED OR TAKEN AWAY OR CHANGED? - Auto strong password generation.

The war over Vista certification

Report from BillAllin, May 2007, permalink Windows Tips

From Clif:

Once again, MS Mole surfaces and speaks to our friend Bill. What evil lurks in the dark underground passages of Redmond? Only the Mole knows.

From Bill Allin:

Hi Clif,

MS Mole reports that the war over Vista certification continues.

Many publishers of freeware programs are doing the expected, upgrading their products to be compliant with Windows Vista without going through the costly process of receiving Microsoft certification. Microsoft is prepared for this. It wants its thousands of dollars for every program that runs on Vista and is prepared to take action against any software that doesn't have the "proper" certification.

When a non-certified program is installed on a Vista system, Microsoft doesn't care if the software actually works or not. What it cares about is whether the program has Vista certification (which is an income stream for MS). When next the Vista box is updated through Microsoft, the uncertified software will be disabled or deleted when the Vista update is installed.

While this will be an annoyance for most home users and small businesses (who can reinstall each freeware program between Vista updates), jaws have dropped among the large business community that will ultimately pay much higher prices for software with Vista certification. Veins are bulging in many corner offices.

Expect virtual machines to proliferate so that freeware programs that will run on a Vista computer using Linux may be hidden from Microsoft. Linux system crossovers that will run Windows programs are gaining popularity quickly.

Rumours have resurfaced in the European Union about breaking up Microsoft. Bill Gates is talking about doing just that, but on his own terms. Instead of having multiple companies each with its own administration and shareholders, Gates wants six Microsoft companies to operate "independently" with one umbrella controller.

Compared to governments that act slowly, the gods of Microsoft can act quickly to sidestep any major move to remove the power that the MS empire has over the modern world. (Who needs a war when you employ thousands of lawyers?)

As Clif Notes readers know well, there is a freeware program for almost every paid application on the market. What the world needs is a dark horse operating system to come through the middle of the pack to run freeware programs. Several are in development in Europe and Asia. The Vista war may morph into one between need and greed.

Get Gmail! and Get Firefox!

You need a free 2.8 GB Gmail account to access many of the cool features at Google. After more than two years in beta testing Gmail is open to the public. Just go to http://gmail.com and sign up for an account.

I think Gmail works best in the awesome Firefox browser. It's free, easy to use, and it's way more secure than Internet Explorer. My favorite thing to do is to customize Firefox so that it does much more than IE ever could. You can select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.

Wow! Over 600 people and still growing! I invite all of you to record your locations on this map. You can include as little or as much information as you wish. I think you'll enjoy seeing yourself there.
